Bhavans Adarsha Vidyalaya (Kakkanad)
Founded in 1938 by Dr. K M Munshi, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan is an intellectual, cultural and educational movement.The Bhavan is dedicated to the twin tasks of interpreting the age old message of the country and of integrating our varied and vibrant culture with the changing needs of the present day world.With the aim of fulfilling the Bhavan’s cherished goal of spreading education throughout the length and breadth of our country.
The Beginning
The school Adarsha Vidyalaya was founded by Shri. R.Vasudevan Pillai and Mrs.Santhi Balagopalan in the year 1989, with a strength of 6 teachers and 53 students. The foundation stone was laid in 1989, by the Dist. Collector Shri. K.R. Rajan. The building was inaugurated on 2nd July 1989 by His Highness Marthanda Varma Elyaraja. The foundation stone for the 2nd block was laid on the same day by His Eminence Antony Cardinal Padiyara. Smt. Ammini Samuel was appointed as the Principal. Adarsha’s office was situated at Palarivattom.
The school is located at Kakkanad, about 1.5 Km. from the Civil Station adjacent to CSEZ. The place is accessible from Ernakulam, Edapally, Kalamassery and Aluva.A public trust had already been formed for the successful conduct of this venture.
The Growth
The school started with classes I – III. Eminent personalities who visited the school were Late R.R.Divakar, former Central Minister and Governor, Swami Sankarananda, President of Sri. Ramakrishna Ashram, and S. Ramakrishnan, Executive Director of B.V.B. Bombay.
An advisory committee was also formed with eminent academicians as its members.
The subjects offered were English, Hindi, Maths, EVSC., Sanskrit and Malayalam. Cultural activities: Dance, Yoga, Music, Jazz, Art Education, Work experience, Library, C.C, P.T, Drawing, H.A., G.K.
In the year 1991 Adarsha Educational Trust merged with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan under the chairmanship of Hon. Justice Radhakrishna Menon. Hon. Justice T.L.Viswanatha Iyer was the Vice chairman and Mr.R.Vasudevan Pillai was the Executive Trustee. The school still functioned as a separate unit. A play school and a daycare centre were started in the same year. The computer course with 3 computers and a printer was started. The K.G.Section was started with 62 students and 6 staff members.
Adarsha become a full -fledged school and the school was affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education and enrolled in the Sahodaya Association of Schools.
From a mere 53 students the school has grown in strength and reputation. There are 2388 students on roll and 156 teaching and non-teaching staff this academic year, with Sri K Suresh as the Principal Bhavan’s Adarsha Vidyalaya, like all other Bhavan’s schools in Kochi, is now a household name not only for its academic excellence but also for its extra curricular and life-skill activities.
